Students will gain understanding and appreciation for the hard lives led by our ancestors. Each having a book of The Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder, will allow them to better track the print and have more meaningful thinking about the text. A few additional copies are needed for our continual influx of students moving into our community.
Prior to the unit, we will have students demonstrate science projects, such as homemade ice cream, making butter, and hard candy. We will relate these projects to the book and discuss how our lives have changed over time. During the book study, we will do many activities including a Blab School through reenactment and literature. These activities will allow students the opportunity to understand the early Pioneer life.
