These books will allow my students to participate in the California Young Reader Nominee program. Students can check out books of their choice over the course of a few months, and then in March they can participate in voting for a winner in each category. Teachers at my site volunteer to hold a cumulative book club meeting in March before the students vote. For example, I would read Fish in a Tree, The War That Saved My Life, and Crenshaw within a couple of months, then sign up for and attend the book clubs, and finally get to pick a winner to vote for in the Intermediate category.
These books are very diverse and usually appeal to a variety of students. The students enjoy the y adventures and love to talk about them in the book clubs with the teachers and/or principal.
