Cello playing is something that became dear to me in my first years of teaching. Between classes, my students hear me perform and practice and ask me continually if they can learn. One thing has become painstakingly obvious to me; my students are curious to play and perform on string instruments but lack the resources to purchase the instruments or take private lessons. Inspired by attending performances of the symphony orchestra in their home town, they began asking why minorities are not represented in orchestras.
My students are becoming advocates for access and inclusion in music. They want to explore genres that are not conventionally available in their school experiences. Most importantly, they are thinking about how they can begin traditions and bring activities to our school that will impact the years beyond theirs. The instruments requested: Student Series Violin, Musicale Series Viola, Violin Shoulder Rests, Self-Adjusting Violin Bridge, and Violin & Viola String Sets, will allow them not only to highlight and discuss the issue they see in orchestral participation, but to change and impact it for years to come. These instruments will serve a number of families this year and provide the foundation to a extra-curricular project that could become co-curricular in the future.
