Our students need something new and different to help learn the ELA standards, but also to broaden their views and encourage empathy in their everyday life. Another teacher and myself want to use The Book Thief to teach ELA standards and also give them a different perspective of a critical time in world history. The story is told from the perspective of Death, and I know this would be a new experience for our students. They will be able to learn about author's choice and techniques, how to use textual evidence to support analysis and inferences, and have discussions with their peers with the goal of encouraging empathy amongst classmates.
