Four, Five, and Six year olds need a chance to move and wiggle while they are working. Too soon, many students are labeled ADHD because they struggle to sit in a chair for the majority of the day. I do not feel that it is something that the students can control. We all need to move! I strive to help my students be successful and I use alternative seating to give them opportunities to not only be comfortable but to get wiggles out while working.
Since beginning alternative seating, I have found a huge decrease in negative behaviors! I allow students to move while they are working and I provide seats that help them. I recently started in a new school and my new classroom has tile and while I would like to provide chances to move, I also want the students to be comfortable. This project will enhance my floor table by creating comfortable seats on the floor versus sitting on a thin carpet I have under the floor spots.
