Lucy Laney Community School is in North Minneapolis. The student body is comprised of about 450 students with 89% economically disadvantaged and the percentage of homeless and/or highly mobile students is at about 16%. Lucy Laney’s reading proficiency is at about 17% on grade level, which is below expectations and statistically correlates with the high number of economically disadvantaged students.
A significant number of students have experienced loss in their immediate family due to violence or deportation, which contributes to stress and trauma. The Lucy Laney library first and foremost seeks to create a calm and safe place for students to come and find books that reflect their own experiences or to escape into a good story for a little while.
