In our classroom we are working on listening to a story, talking about the story and retelling a story. This is difficult for many Kindergarten students. Over the years I have found that it is enjoyable to hear the story many times. In order for us to do that, we use books, flannel boards, puppets and audio to tell and retell stories. What fun it is to work with puppets or tell the story on the flannel board. Working with a partner, making friends and learning to listen to the storyteller is an important skill. These skills will help us get to our ending goal of reading!
Kindergarten kids now are hungry: hungry to read! When a child knows a story and is confident enough to share that story, even with one partner, their confidence builds. Imagine walking into a classroom where all kids are retelling a story with puppets, flannel board pieces or acting it out! Imagine the other half listening and learning while listening. This is magic!
It is my hope that you are Hungry to Help! Thank you for your time and your consideration!
