Some of my students are already interested in reading. However, the majority have shared that they see reading as something they MUST do, rather than something they CHOOSE to do.
I know that so much of the joy that comes from reading is about finding texts that reflect your own experience with content that you can discuss with others. Reading as a social activity makes it that much more enjoyable and come alive in ways that would not happen without belonging to a community of readers.
I know that by creating the opportunity for students to engage in literature circles, and have the choice of reading high interest books, they will begin to see reading as something they enjoy doing instead of something they are forced to do.
