The students in my classroom learn by manipulating objects. They also need time to play creatively to foster problem solving skills, and interact with each other collaboratively to foster social skills.
I believe very strongly in including creative play outside of recess time in our daily schedule. This is a time of day that I can depend on being engaging to my students.
Since my students are developmentally delayed, it is very difficult to find things that they can do independently when the teachers and assistant both have a group. STEM materials, games, and crafts are the activities they can succeed in independently.
