The books I am requesting this year have been chosen because they represent the wide variety of students in our community. Everything from nonfiction to graphic novels, girl or boy to non-binary narrators, immigrant and refugee stories to good-old teenage angst. It's all here.
Which book will you put in the hands of an eager child?
I've seen the power of the right book in the right hands. Students tell me every year they've "rediscovered reading." It pains me to think our educational system beats this desire out of them. Book reports, reading levels, quizzes. What about reading for the absolute pleasure of it? Because it's fun and enlightening and necessary like air? They used to love to read; it's our duty to reignite that passion!
