Independent Reading so so important for students to find books that they love! In order for kids to become skilled, lifelong readers, they must first have an "entrance point" into reading- something that sparked their interest, that they could relate to, or simply swept them up into a whole new world.
Independent Reading allows students to be engaged in books of their choice at their level, giving them the perfect opportunity to apply reading skills and strategies that we work on in class. This is especially important for students in middle school who often are struggling with issues of identity, change, and a host of others, but have difficulty empathizing or talking about these issues with others. Books like Harry Potter, the Bluford Series, and the Artemis Fowl Collection give students a feeling of not being alone and a window into other perspectives. Finding great books for them is essential.
