Students in my classroom will be using the recorders to learn to read music. Music in the classroom has been proven to help students improve test scores and language skills. Students learn self discipline and learn to work together to perform the music they are learning.
Music also helps to develop creative thinking, math skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial skills. It is one of the only subjects where the students are using both sides of their brains simultaneously. They are also more likely to stay engaged in other areas of school. We have already begun to see how adding this subject to the curriculum at our school has helped the students in math and in language arts. It is our desire to continue this through engaging activities that students are excited about and eager to learn. The recorders are just one of the means through which this happens.
Right now I only have one set of classroom recorders so we have to wash them and then share between classes, which is not always easy or the best solution. It is my goal to have a classroom set for each of my third grade classes.
