My project is simple: we have so many students from Kindergarten up to 8th grade that really enjoy playing chess, but we do not have enough full sets to play. After four years of some serious use, our chess boards are missing many pieces. This has caused a little healthy competition in the morning for my students to come in and approach me ASAP for one of the two boards with all the pieces.
Chess promotes critical thinking and it is fun! Our students are finding ways to be productive in the morning as they wait for class, but they are also revving up their brains for the day! They are lucky enough to have chess as a special once every 8 days, but they could really benefit from that extra practice throughout the week.
I don't want to have to keep telling the students they have to try again tomorrow to get the boards in time.
