The KMS book club is 18 members strong, including both boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 16. We meet once a week to do a variety of activities such as reading and discussing books, taking field trips to local libraries and book stores, and doing community service projects such as volunteering at the annual Honolulu Books and Music Festival.
Our members come from a school in which 60% of the student body is receiving free or reduced-price lunch and over 30% are English Language Learners. Through our book club, we strive to expose our students to the pleasure of participating in a literary community and to help them develop the knowledge and skills they will need to succeed in school, in the workplace, and in the world.
