My students span the race, culture, academic, and economic spectrum of the urban area in which we live. They speak at least four home languages other than English, their parents' education ranges from middle school to graduate school, and their cultural differences add excitement to every discussion. Most families at our school struggle with some sort of economic uncertainty. Some live in poor communities where basic daily needs and personal safety are real concerns. Others have a more solid footing in the middle class, but are feeling that footing slip due to pay cuts, job losses, or housing costs. School is a place where my students can feel safe and comfortable for at least a few hours a day. Here they can have a hot lunch (many qualify for free or reduced cost lunch), a respect filled classroom, and a place to learn and think about their futures.
