Every day in our classroom, we listen to books being read. During center time, the kids love to be able to listen to different and fun books on cd/tape and then draw and write about different parts of the story. We have a cd/tape player but the sound goes on and off intermittently on the students while they are listening. This causes a bit of a commotion in class as they are trying to figure out what happened and are calling to me to try to come and fix it while I am in small groups with other students reading.
A new cd/tape player would allow them to independently start and stop the stories and listen to them without it stopping or the sound being scratchy and they could choose stories that they want to listen to! My students love listening to books and this would foster their love of reading! I love when they tell me about different books that they enjoyed listening to and they have amazing conversations amongst themselves after listening to stories. I love hearing them discuss characters, the setting and comparing it to other books we've read or listened to. It not only helps their reading skills but also their language skills!
