Each day my students work diligently on reading and math. They practice spelling and work on their writing. For each of these subjects, I have on level resources to help students find success, but what happens when student's have difficulty accessing the content? What should we do when a student is hindered by his or her ability to process what is going on around them? By meeting the sensory needs of my students, I will be better able to move all students forward in their learning. Stress balls and modified pencil grips take away some of the frustration associated with daily tasks and calm down kits provide support when needed. Minimizing melt downs keeps all students in the classroom and engaged in learning. Teaching students understanding and empathy for people who learn differently than they do improves the climate of my classroom and respect for diversity.
