The center activities I am requesting will go a long way in promoting academic and social growth with my scholars! Given the great diversity in my students' backgrounds and learning abilities, I have found small group learning to be the most effective use of instructional time. I can provide differentiated instruction to four to six students, while the rest of the class rotates through other centers throughout the room.
It is so important that the students who are not at my table are maximizing their learning potential with hands-on activities that are both content-rich and fun. I have filled my cart with center activities from Lakeshore Learning that I know my students will love! Center time also promotes social learning by developing students sense of independence, team-building and communication skills. The majority of the items in my cart are math center activities, including several fluency puzzles, a number line chart, and magnetic numbers. Our first grade math curriculum focuses heavily on addition and subtraction strategies. The puzzles in my cart will reinforce students' mental math skills and help prepare them for second grade and real life mathematical applications. I was also excited to find several word building puzzles that help build students' phonological awareness, which is a critical predictor of future reading ability.
While I purchased and accumulated some activities during my first year of teaching, I quickly realized students need novel learning experiences to maintain a high level of enthusiasm toward learning. My students are passionate and joyful and come to school ready to learn every day. I thank you in advance for helping me support joyful learning in my classroom with great center activities this year!
