Spain, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Venezuela, Guatemala, China, Morocco, India... these are the countries where my students have come from. My bilingual classroom is one of two high school bilingual classrooms in our district. My bilingual classroom is a wonderful mix of cultures and ideas. Words I would use to describe my students are: hard workers, committed, creative, and outgoing, even though they are coming from low income families.
In November 2017 we had an influx of students displaced from Puerto Rico because the Hurricane Mara. After eight months, these students arriving at our school are still facing the lost of comfort of their homes, their country and are faced into a new community, school system while attempting to develop proficiency in a new language. My students areas of need are: math, science, English, reading comprehension and use of technology.
