Students in the first grade are very active, not only on the playground but in the classroom as well! Students need the opportunity to move and wiggle throughout their lesson plans in order to keep their minds engaged. My students are used to being outside, playing, fishing, dancing, running, and jumping! They don't turn off their energy when they get inside! By allowing my students to have adaptive, flexible seating options, I am giving them the respect and mutual understanding of where they are developmentally and recognizing that their best place to learn may be a pillow, a stool, a rocking chair or a bean bag!
It is very powerful to give students a choice and a voice in the classroom. I don't choose the hardest plastic chair in my house when I am trying to learn something new! Children deserve a comfortable, child-friendly learning environment in which they can move about the room to find a place that best meets their needs. Some students work better on the floor, others at a table, while others learn best standing at a counter. I want to allow my students every opportunity for success!
