My 8th grade students are encouraged to read independently for short periods of time during class. By having these young adult books available in my classroom for them to check out, the students will be able to easily find books they are actually interested in reading. These books are all chosen by myself with diverse learners in mind.
Some of my students do not have access to books outside of school. I want my classroom library to be their resource and their refuge. I have students who need to be challenged, I have students who struggle and need extra encouragement, and I have students who need to see themselves represented in literature.
