My students want access to inclusive, multi-cultural stories that reflect their experiences and can open their eyes at the same time. They express inerest in wanting to read about teens who endure struggles like them. They are eager for stories that can inspire and motivate them.
The titles I have chosen for my project represent marginalized young people who are using their voices to empower themselves and make a difference in the world, something that my students aspire to do. These books will be displayed in my classroom and will be part of a classroom library. At our Title 1 school in San Diego, we have a small library that is made up of about six shelves full of old, out-dated, worn books. In addition, because of our school's budget, our librarian is only on campus once a week. My students need new, fresh, modern stories that are culturally relevant. They need access to books daily, not just once a week.
The titles in this project will allow me to implement independent reading time in my classroom a few times a week. This is something that my students desire, but our school does not have the resources to make it happen. These books will aid my students in developing their reading skills and foster a love of reading.
