My journalism students are my life. They make me proud every single day.
I teach at a Title I school. More than 90 percent of students qualify for free lunch. Their personal stories of poverty, homelessness, domestic violence and neglect tear at my heartstrings, and their tenacity, resilience, work ethic and perseverance inspire me. They work so hard to change their circumstances. They believe in me and in journalism. They value the First Amendment and recognize the power that their voices carry and how they can use journalism to fight for equality and justice.
They shine in the classroom to create award-winning student journalism. Their photos, stories and graphic design won eight state awards, including the top award for news story writing, last spring. I was so proud that I used $1,400 of my personal savings to send them to a state convention. It was the best $1,400 I've ever spent!
