Visual timers will have a major effect on my students on a daily basis. Since a visual timer uses both sight and sound it can fit a variety of students and their needs. It will show students when it is time to transition to another activity and it will help to prevent negative behaviors. The timers will help students understand when they should be done with an activity so they can finish their project in a calmly matter. It can also help by showing how much time is left until they can get to a favored activity such as having a break time with the computer.
My students also need bean bags for sensory integration and structured break time. The bean bags will allow students to have a safe seating area. The students will use the visual timers so they know how long their break is and when it is time to end their break. The students will work on using independent skills since they will be able to see and/or hear the timer and know to return to the classroom table.
