My students come to my classroom from widely divergent contexts, yet the books available to them at our school library do not often represent the rich diversity encompassed in our learning community. As a first year teacher, I do not yet have the funds to build a vibrant classroom library that could spark or sustain their love of literature.
Despite the changing demographics of this country, students of color, queer students, and students with disabilities are rarely protagonists in young adult novels. It is my hope Esperanza Rising or The House on Mango Street could positively impact my Latina students' relationship with literature and reading. Persepolis or American Born Chinese could be an entry point to students who come from more visual or symbolic backgrounds. Luna could open my students' eyes to the trials and triumphs of my trans students.
I want literature that represents my students to be easily accessible and reflective of their lived experience. The donation of these books would help be create a truly student-centered learning environment.
