The students in my classroom are assigned labels like "autistic," "fragile x syndrome," "down syndrome" and even "mentally retarded". But we are so much more than these labels. At our public high school, we are able to sit side by side with our typically developing peers in science, history and art classes. We are not hidden away in a basement room or a portable class in the parking lot like the special education classes of old. We strive everyday to desegregate classrooms and educate people about who we are, what we can do and what we have to offer the world.
