I believe that creating lifelong readers is an obligation I have as a teacher and am intentional about cultivating that mindset in my class. At the beginning of each year as I get to know students, I take the time to write a personalized list of at least 8-10 book recommendations tailored for each individual. I also host a "book tasting" where students get time in class to preview many, many novels in one class period, and I regularly share book talks about titles I have enjoyed that they might like. This is all designed to generate interest and enthusiasm, and along with those, motivation to read. We regularly start class throughout the year with 10 minutes of independent, self-selected reading to also provide students the opportunity to dive into whatever good book they choose.
By donating to this project, you will not only help students have access to high-interest titles in our classroom library, you will ultimately support them in truly becoming empowered, lifelong readers. The books I have selected are all titles that are currently on the Missouri Gateway Award list for high school literature, are high-demand titles students often request, or are suggested by #ProjectLitComm, a grassroots literacy movement empowering readers and leaders in hundreds of schools and communities across the country.
