Students behave differently and engage more thoughtfully when gathered together on a rug, especially when it's the whole class who meets together. Normally thought of as a staple of primary classrooms, a rug in my 4th grade classroom would give us a chance to meet for all kinds of learning experiences, from morning meeting to daily number talks in math. Meeting on the rug as a class breaks down the physical proximity and eliminates the isolation and false protection of a desk.
Something magical happens when children of all ages meet together on a classroom rug. Sitting together cultivates classroom community in a way that cannot be achieved otherwise. I have been teaching for 32 years and have yearned for a classroom rug since I returned to teaching 4th grade 5 years ago. Please consider helping to make this magic happen in my classroom this year!
