Our state standards demand a high level of competence using a graphing calculator so our district gives out rigorous tests that require students to work on TI-84s. These calculators really help students visualize the algebraic world. They allow students who are behind to make up for some of their shortcomings and allow students who are at grade level to further perfect their mathematical skills and increase their speed solving problems. Technology is the bridge into our future, so it would be great for my students to have the opportunity to use this great mathematical tool.
Right now, we don't have enough and students have to share with one another but asking them to pay $100 for a calculator is not reasonable. This technology will help them do problems quickly they otherwise would not be able to do with ease. It will allow them to better approach real world problems involving difficult calculations. It would be tremendous for them to each have a calculator when they come to class so they can do the work well and with ease.
