As someone that comes from a reading education background, I emphasize the importance of reading and my students believe it too. During reading groups, we work on fluency and accuracy through repeated readings of books on their reading level. We also engage in choral reading and echo reading to master automaticity. Then we target comprehension through research-based strategies and hands-on activities. As these skills become more fluid, the students build their stamina and confidence in reading higher-level books.
They know that everyone might have a different starting point, but that will not discourage them from working towards their own goal. They understand that they can only get better at something if they keep practicing.
My students believe in themselves and they strive to become readers that make a difference in the world. They discuss growing into literate adults that become helpful citizens. I am so amazed every day by how much progress they are making.
