Students engage in stories they are invested in, while teaching reading skill I usually call on kids to remember details from a story that we have read together. This helps them conceptualize character traits, plot, theme, conflict, etc as they connect across texts.
Additionally when texts are dynamic, students also relate their social emotional learning to them. I read texts where the main characters are of similar age to my 5th graders. While reading we discuss how the characters face similar situations related to themes centered around friendships, bullying, racism, and trouble at home. These books serve as windows and mirrors into their lives.
