Literacy is big in first grade. Students learn about different genres, discuss story elements and character. To assure that all students learn these important skills, we have discussions around a small table about what we’ve read. Students are better engaged and feel more comfortable participating in a smaller group. We also teach Math in small groups. Math skills are varied at this age.
Teaching a small group of students at a table allows the teacher to target specific skills needed by the group. A semi-circle seating arrangement allows for the teacher to work with each student individually or as a whole, effectively.
