Music is everywhere. All students should have access to quality musical instruction where they can learn music skills as a performer and creator and also as a listener. Students in my school have a solid music curriculum starting in kindergarten, but there is currently no culminating activity that allows them to showcase what they've learned by the time they reach 5th grade.
Music is vital to our lives and gives everything around us meaning. When students have the opportunity to create and perform music, they are able to experience the joy and confidence that comes from learning to play an instrument.
Providing my students with ukuleles to play during their 5th grade year will allow them to put all the puzzle pieces together and demonstrate what they have learned throughout elementary school. They will be introduced to a new instrument that can be a lasting hobby for years to come! It is my hope that each of them will continue to develop a love of music by having this experience.
