The latest and greatest Common Core Math curriculum is rich with words and reasoning. Many of my students have specific learning disabilities which affect reading and reasoning. As I teach K-6th grade, I need materials that will cover a range of grade levels and abilities.
Many of my students are stronger in math than in other subject areas. They do well with the concrete math facts and many understand how to work with numbers. They still fall behind due to the amount of reading and writing involved with math. I'd love to be able to use books such as Word Problems for Nonreaders and Basic Picture Math and Math Practice to help my non- or struggling readers continue to thrive in the subject that is a strength. Every student needs to feel confident and strong in at least one area of academics so that the confidence can spill over into other areas.
