Middle school is a difficult transition for a lot of my students, as it comes with brand new responsibilities and routines. Independent reading is something they struggle with, and often simply do not want to do. Despite my efforts to maintain a relevant classroom library, they simply do not want to sit at a desk and read.
"Miss, can I sit on the floor? Can I stand and work?" is a common question in my room, regardless of the task we are working on. My students have a sense of where they work best and what they need to be engaged and successful, but they need the right resources. (And, of course, I don't really want them sitting on a hard, cold, tiled floor!) This year in particular, I have a lot of language learners who often need the flexibility and comfort that alternative seating provides.
Having these flexible seating options and a rug located in the back of my classroom where my library books are would completely revamp my classroom's environment. I can already see students begging to sit in the back and read in one of the brightly colored chairs or on a bouncy seat!
