There is something powerful in holding a book in your hands. While there is online access to PDFs of The House on Mango Street, this is not enough to instill a love of literature. My hope is that by allowing students to engage with a physically bound book, they will dive deeper into the story.
My students are not accustom to seeing characters like them in literature, and I believe that many of them will be able to relate to the characters in The House on Mango Street in ways they have not been able before. This book is being taught as part of a unit on cultural narratives. Students will interact with the novel as they think deeply about their only family, life, and culture in order to write a series of short vignettes to share who they are.
