Why can't more students of color read about characters who look, think, and sound like them? I want my students to have the experience of being able to be excited when they're reading an assigned novel in school. I want students to feel empowered, to feel like they have a voice. I want them to feel like they have a place in life, especially in my classroom. If I had the honor of teaching the novel The Hate U Give, it will allow me to accomplish all of these things. I plan to explore the book in ways that allow students to think outside the box while analyzing a relatable and relevant text.
