This is my second year teaching chess at Price Middle School. Our school has a 98 percent poverty rate and our students battle the effects of poverty every day. Chess has taught my students to think before they act and to anticipate the consequences of every move. Chess has improved my students problem solving skills and ability to think critically. Through chess my students are learning the importance of paying attention to detail. They are learning to be resilient by playing a game through to its end - win or lose. My students are learning sportsmanship and to be good winners and also good losers. Chess has given my students confidence and self esteem. We are using chess to build bridges with our community. Students are teaching their families and friends to play chess. Once a month we partner with the Atlanta Fire Department for Chess With First Responders.
