My classroom is a place where struggling students discover how brilliant they are. My 11th graders are convinced that reading is boring. And they are demoralized because they have failed the ELA Regents that they need to pass to graduate (some have failed it twice).
However, with the right books, graphic novels, and magazines, their relationship to words, to reading, to writing, and to testing will change! Magazines with articles at my students' reading and interest levels will engage them, enrich their background knowledge, and get them to be curious about words. Graphic novels with heroes that look like my students will help them see their own special powers. Books that tell stories of how undocumented young people overcame tremendous odds will inspire my students to overcome their their own obstacles.
