Using base ten blocks to teach place value makes the math come to life. Not only can we model whole number place value, but also we can develop the decimal place value system.
Using these base ten blocks, I can play a game with my students that allows them to discover the base of our number system is ten; making learning fun and self-directed. The students will count large amounts trying not to use the word ten or any multiple of ten. Each student has a close pin and they lose their clothes pin if they say ten, twenty, thirty, etc. We then discuss as a class the strategies they use to count, which always results in a few more lost clothes pins.
This discussion leads to the students discovering we change place value when we reach a unit of ten. In this manner of teaching. they build their own knowledge.
