Flexible seating and sensory support tools are classroom management tools that are very helpful especially in the Special Education setting. In the past school year, I introduced to my students the ball chair that I borrowed from our Crisis Intervention Specialist along with soft bendable fidgets. The students used the ball chair on rotation and the fidgets as needed during instruction. According to them, the tools helped them to be more attentive and alert.
Research supports that the sensory input provided by flexible seating has health and academic benefits. Flexible seating allows students to wobble, rock or bounce, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. It also helps keep young minds focused and alert.
It is my hope that with the wobble chairs and ball chairs as well as some other sensory fidgets that I can make available to my students, I will be able to facilitate more opportunities for my students to be productive and highly engaged in learning.
