I am trying to instill the love of reading in my students. Readers Make Leaders is a way for me to motivate my students to read by getting rewarded for reading. My school has purchased the web-based program called, Accelerated Reader. This is a program in which students can read books and take a comprehension test. This is all self-guided. Students have log in numbers and passwords. They are able to self-monitor their progress. Students each have a reading chart that they adhere stickers to for each test passed with an 80% or better.
Regardless of reading level all students can participate and earn prizes!
Once students have passed 5 tests, they get to get into my prize box. As you can imagine, this works! It works so well students are going through prizes quickly!
Their achievements are on display in the classroom in the form of owls with their names that "fly" to achievements levels. Students are awarded with a certificate and treat upon reaching 30 points. There is another prize level at 60 and so on.
The items requested are incentive items for the prize box as well as some inspirational pillows and a new reading rug. The prizes are a real motivator for students to read and work towards a goal!
