One daily life skill my students need to work on is how to make their own bed. Having a bed complete with sheets and a pillow available during life skills time would enable my students to work with the tools to learn how to properly make a bed - with the goal being that they would be able to carry over this skill over to the home environment.
There are three basic ways children learn: instructions, modeling, and step-by-step. Modeling is usually the most efficient way for children to learn. The more they see the skill being done and practice it, the more likely they are to learn that skill - in this case, a life skills station dedicated to making a bed.
A roll away bed would provide my students with an example of a real bed - it can be folded and rolled out of the way when not in use. The standard size twin sheets allow my students the experience of working with the same size sheets they may be using at home to make their own bed. A pillow would provide my students with the practice of putting on a pillowcase.
With the right preparation and patience, it is my hope that fostering independence will allow my students to learn essential life skills.
