As astonishing as this may sound, there are some children who have NEVER held a pencil in their 5 years of life until they walk through my doors! Often times, they grip the pencil with their entire fist. So, before I can teach them to form letters, I must teach them how to hold writing utensils and we practice making the shapes that require letter formation. They are diagonals, circles, vertical lines, horizontal lines, etc... I have found the most amazing program that does all of these skills simultaneously-Handwriting Without Tears. With this amazing and research-based program, I want to order magnet kits of both upper and lower case letters and numbers. I want to order boards for practice. We need little pencils and grips for little hands. We need center activities that the students can use in whole groups, small groups and individually. There will be "No Tears Here" when my kiddos go to first grade!
