I am very fortunate have a very diverse population within my first grade classroom. It gives the students opportunities to learn and accept differences of others and find similarities. I want my classroom library to reflect the diverse population I have in my classroom. Sadly it does not.
Research has shown that students who can identify and see themselves in books are more likely to read. Many of the students pick books based on their interest, what they have read before, titles and authors, and what they see on the front cover. I want to create a library in which my students can see themselves as the characters. I want my students to be exposed to many characters and stories from different cultures, ethnicities, race, socioeconomic status, and so on to engage them more as readers.
