My students are emerging readers and get very excited about the adventures that are found in books. It is interesting to see their reactions to the problems and the solutions that unfold before them. When I first arrived in my functional skills classroom, the first thing I noticed missing was a classroom library. Since resources scare in our district, my first plan of action was to bring books to these brilliant minds.
Reading stimulates the mind in a way that allows the reader to create his or her own mental movies. While some students are able to independently read, other students in my class are not. It would be great to have a variety of leveled reading books in our library so students can self-select books to read. It has been my experience that students are more likely to develop a love for reading if they are able to choose a book to read that is on their reading level and also spark their interest.
