My students are struggling readers who have difficulty reading books they don't have a connection to. I chose the books The Egypt Game and The Indian in the Cupboard because they are topics my students have shown an interest in. My students love participating in book clubs and don't realize they are practicing skills they typically find to be boring or too hard for them.
Students learn more when they are interested in the subject. My students will become better readers by completing book clubs and practicing reading skills they will need as they get older. After we finish reading a novel, there is always an enrichment project for the students to complete. Most recently they completed a story quilt for Charlotte's Web. They were able to showcase their artistic sides and what they learned while they were reading.
