These books will help to create a strong independent reading program in my classroom. For the past few years my students have had the opportunity to engage with texts in guided and independent reading. Currently, our classroom library is sparse, giving my students limited choices of what they can read. We have taken trips to the public library, but many students have trouble getting there to return the books on time. My students are already strong, interested readers. They are always looking for book recommendations outside of our assigned reading. By helping us revamp our classroom library, you will be providing my students with the chance to engage with rich, contemporary, diverse, and award winning books during their independent reading time. I want my students to experience the moment of reading a book you don’t want to put down, to see through the words on the page, into the story, experience, empathy. They will take these stories and experiences into high school, college, and adulthood. In reading great books we become better writers and citizens of the world. Help me give my students access to great books! Books that help us see the other side, change the world, books that free us.
