Every child deserves the chance to feel successful as a reader! Sadly, many of my students do not have access to books at home. I work in a low socio-economic school with over 70% of my students receiving free or reduced lunch. Their families do not have the money to spend on books. That's why I have implemented a Take Home Reading program that ensures every child in my class has a book to read even at home (that is also at their level!)
Reading is a fundamental piece of a child's education and it starts in first grade!
I want my students to not only have the experience of feeling successful in reading and understanding books but also that love of reading that comes when you encounter that "just right" book that is not only accessible to your reading level but also your interests. I know my students love to learn about science. They love animals and have so many questions about how things work. These guided science readers give them that chance to learn from books while also reading. The comic book readers are also really engaging and a fun way for my sillier students to engage with texts. I want to show them that reading opens doors to all sorts of fun stories! I have also requested the book bins to keep these resources well organized and easy for my students to access. They are able to choose from their level what book looks interesting to them so that they are also taking charge of their learning and seeing how powerful and fun it can be to read!
