Currently, we have limited funding and manipulatives or activities to assist students in understanding the value of decimals and money. By purchasing manipulatives and games students will be able to conceptually understand the concept of money and decimals. Also, purchasing the materials in vinyl storage packages will allow for easy storage and longevity of the manipulative.
To understand decimals, students only have base 10 blocks right now but the translucent decimal and fraction representations allow students a new visual in order to compare and find equivalent decimals. Students currently have plastic coins and paper bills to practice money. The money games will provide our students the extra practice they need to understand the value of each bill and coin. This will also allow them to practice different combinations to pay for items and determining change. The allowance game will provide real world practice for students that can connect to their home lives.
